    Abstract: A method and apparatus for controlling the adjustment of printer hammers which impact against an associated moveable member on which characters are present. Each hammer includes a coil which is energized at the appropriate time, taking into consideration the "flight time" of the associated hammer. These flight times are determined by detecting a change in the back EMF in the energizing current to the coil. These flight times are averaged to obtain a running average of the last several successive flight times (for each hammer in the printer), and successive timing pulses from a timing disc are used to obtain an almost instantaneous velocity of the moveable member (like a printer drum) just prior to a character to be printed. The last several successive flight times are stored in a non-volatile RAM of a controller to enable the printer to be ready at a next start up.

During a momentary slowdown in the motor speed, the projecting element moves away from the resilient material and permits the momentum of the driven device to maintain its speed while the motor recovers its speed.

    Abstract: A device for monitoring and compensating for changes in the flight time of the print hammers of impact printers is disclosed. The flight time of the respectively monitored hammer is calculated from the elapsed time between the moment of firing of a hammer and the moment of impact of the print type carrier against the impact platen. In order to ensure automatic self-adjustment of all print hammers in predetermined test cycles, without the actual printing process itself being affected, and without there being any test imprints on the record carrier, the print type carrier includes, in addition to the standard print types, an additional test type. The impact surface area of the test type is large enough such that no visible imprint is made upon its impact on the record carrier because of the low impact pressure.

    Abstract: The present invention relates to a dot matrix printer which makes use of multiple dot patterns distributed on the cylinder, belt, hand or drum of a line printer to provide an improved printing throughput for an all addressable line printer. In a dot-helix matrix printer, different arrangements of the dots are used which can be varied in position and spacing to increase printing speed. On a belt, band or drum line printer, multiple dot patterns are given a predetermined distribution. More specifically, arrangements of dots are used which provide enhanced performance due to the fact that they are determined by an analysis of the statistical occurrence of a particular dot pattern in a character set. The higher statistical probability dot patterns are used more often on the belt, band or drum.

    Abstract: A printer of the type including a platen, a bank of hammers extending in a straight line along and spaced from the platen and a continuous metal band of magnetizable material on which are mounted a plurality of print elements is provided with drive means for moving the band between the platen and the hammer bank and control means for controlling the movement of the band so that the print elements on the band move along the line of hammers. The band drive means includes a drive wheel located near one end of the hammer bank and means for forcing the band into close contact with the peripheral surface of the drive wheel. The means for forcing the band into close contact with the peripheral surface of the drive wheel can be a permanent magnet member located on the surface of the drive wheel. The band movement control means includes guide means for guiding the band so that it extends along the hammer bank and permanent magnet means adapted to force the band into close contact with the guide means.

    Abstract: A dot matrix printer is described in which the dots are formed by impact at an intersection between a raised ridge on a platen and a vertical ridge or bar font member. A moving belt carries a plurality of individually mounted vertical bar segments. The bar segments are each mounted on a flexible finger and can be deflected out of the path of the moving belt by impact from a print hammer mechanism. The vertical bars may be caused thusly to individually impact against a platen arranged parallel to the line of travel of the fingers. The platen may have a plurality of raised knife-edge ridges on its surface. By appropriate timing of hammer actuations, individual bar elements may be caused to impact against the knife-edge ridges on the platen. If the paper and ribbon are interposed between the bar fingers and the knife-edge ridges, a mark in the shape of the intersectional area between the bar and the knife-edge ridge can be made.

    Abstract: Circuit for detecting variations in the nominal velocity of a character band and adjusting the hammer firing times to compensate for the variations. This circuit measures deviations in band velocity that are either faster or slower than a nominal velocity during each character emitter pulse and makes an appropriate correction in the subscan times that gate the hammer firing signals. A bidirectional counter is counted up at a high frequency to a value representing the emitter period including the velocity deviation and then counted down after the error determination at a selected frequency that is a preselected fraction of the high frequency. This technique corrects for each character emitter pulse and incorporates a timing proportionality to assure correct hammer impact.

    Abstract: An improved pulley system for use with band printers or the like. A steel printing band is looped around a pair of capstans covered by sleeves made of elastomeric material. The sleeves include a plurality of downwardly angled flexible circumferential flanges and a lower horizontal rim. The band contacts the flanges and as the capstans rotate, inward force on the band is transferred to a downward force by means of the flanges. The downward force causes the band to move into contact with the lower horizontal rim, thereby vertically aligning the band in the printer. In an alternate embodiment, a plurality of non-flexible circumferential ridges are included. The central ridges extend farther out from the surface of the sleeve and serve to define a crown. The sleeve configuration serves to reduce wear and accurately align the printing band within the printer assembly.
