    Abstract: Sample extraction or trimming from an end strip of an elongated formed metal that is coiled in layers within a tensioned metal coil resting on driven rollers. A cut channel is formed across the material width. In some embodiments the cut channel is formed between the rollers and by cutting at an angle relative to the coil outer surface. Coil weight and/or a coil tensioner mechanism inhibits coil relaxation along the cut channel by maintaining tension on wrapped layers against each other when the coil is unbanded for sample extraction. The coil is rotated so that the cut channel clears the rollers laterally. Material downstream the cut is then separated from the coil. After trimming and/or sample extraction the coil maintains rolled tautness for ease of rebanding.

The profile of grooves and bosses may be defined by a plurality of intersecting concave and convex radii. The tube is resistant to creep, carburization and metal dusting. The tube also has an enhanced heat transfer rate, and a desirable surface roughness. A method of making the tube is also provided. The method essentially consists of mechanically deforming the interior surface of the tube by passing a series of cutting inserts on support rings having incrementally-differing dimensions over the interior surface.

    Abstract: A broach tool for finishing a hollow hole has a number of cutting edges arranged in order of dimensions in a longitudinal direction. The cutting edges in at least a finishing portion are formed of cemented carbide. A cutting depth of each edge in a cutting direction is 5 &mgr;m to 15 &mgr;m for slots such as a spline hole and a ball groove, or 3 &mgr;m to less than 9 &mgr;m for a round broach hole. A work has the hollow hole pre-worked leaving a finish cutting allowance, and has hardness of 45 to 65 HRC (Rockwell hardness C scale) after subjected to a thermal treatment. A hollow hole cut surface is finished into the finished dimension with use of the broach tool. The broach tool has little chipping on cutting edge tips and is hardly abnormally worn and has a long life.

    Abstract: A method of forming a drive surface on an eccentric pin of a drive shaft for a scroll-type compressor is provided. First, an eccentric pin having an axis and a generally cylindrical outer surface disposed radially about the axis is provided. Next, a broaching tool having a machining face with a contour is provided. The contour may be a concave shallow bell-shaped curve. Finally, the drive surface is formed by engaging the outer surface with the machining face transverse to the axis. In this manner, the machining face forms a shape complementary to the contour on the eccentric pin thereby forming a slight crown on the drive surface. The broaching tool produces an adequate surface finish so that no subsequent machining operations to the drive surface are necessary.

The method comprises the steps of gripping the component (1) in a gripping mechanism (2) of a workholding device, performing a first cutting operation (5) in which the slot is cut in the bore by a series of progressively deeper cutting stroke of a cutting tool (5), further machining (30) the bore of the component, the machining of the bore being carried out while the component remains gripped in the gripping mechanism, characterized in that while the component remains gripped in the gripping mechanism the slot undergoes a second cutting operation (5) similar to the first operation.

The actual error of the slide is thus determined, and portions of the surface of the bar can be gradually scraped or refined by other means until the sensors indicate that the surface has become a precise straight edge. The broach then passes through the piece part and through a lower broach guide means positioned in the bed plate. A broach pulling unit receives the bottom of the broach and reciprocates the broach in an up and down vertical cutting operation. The broach is maintained in position and alignment by means of the upper and lower broach guide means which are disposed above and below the piece part. The upper and lower broach guide means are removable and replaceable after a predetermined amount of wear has occurred.
