Abstract: A wheeled trolley carries various tools across an object to be worked. A track attaches directly to the work and simultaneously isolates the tool from the work. A standard connection to the trolley readily accommodates a variety of diverse tools, using a keyway or the like to ensure accurate and repeatable placement of the tools. A preferred contouring guide allows a tool to be moved through an arc, where the focal point of the arc may be set to produce an infinite variety of custom shapes, bevels or angles of cut. An upper stop is provided which readily sets the break line between surface finish and edge contour. An adjustable tool carriage allows control over both position and force, including preloading a work tool with force. Resilience is incorporated into the apparatus to accommodate diverse hardness and abrasion characteristics, and, in at least one embodiment, to enable the track to accurately follow a warped or sagging work piece.

  • Patent number: 6314853
Abstract: A cutting apparatus for cutting a rail or other elongated workpiece includes a rotatable blade for cutting the rail, a blade cover for covering the blade, an engine (or motor) for driving the blade, and a frame for supporting the blade, the blade cover and the driver. The cutting apparatus further includes link mechanisms. One link mechanism supports the blade and the blade cover relative to the frame and permits the blade cover to move while maintaining a predetermined attitude during cutting. Therefore, the blade cover moves vertically and avoids hitting obstacles. Another link mechanism moves the driver while maintaining a predetermined attitude of the driver. Therefore, the driver remains level during cutting.

Abstract: A cutting machine for a railroad rail performs clamping by use of a screw to fasten a catch arm onto a gauge which indicates a cutting position and is fastened onto a railroad rail. The catch frame is connected to a main body block via slide shafts, and a rotating grinding disk saw, driven by an engine mounted on the main body block, is rocked by working a stroke handle to smoothly raise and lower the rotating grinding disk saw within a cut opening to cut the railroad rail crosswise. By varying the cut of the rotating grinding disk saw, frictional resistance to cutting is reduced and the generation of frictional heat is prevented, permitting use of a small-scale engine and improving the accuracy of the cut.
