    Abstract: A protective skin lotion comprises a liquid composition in the form of an oil-in-water emulsion in which the oil phase is composed of cosmetic emollient oils, and in which the water phase contains quaternary ammonium cellulose ether polymer. The formulation improvement comprises incorporating a lactate salt in the water phase of the lotion, and preferably, also, a quaternary ammonium salt in the oil phase. The retention of the lotion on the skin is improved by the presence of the lactate salt, and to an even greater extent by the use of both the lactate salt and the quaternary ammonium salt.
