  • Patent number: 8085321
Abstract: An apparatus for and a method of operating an array of pixels of an image sensor, where each pixel includes at least a photosensor, an associated storage device and a floating diffusion region and the array of pixels is configured in a plurality of rows and columns. The photosensors associated with the pixels are reset and charges are accumulated in the photosensor. The accumulated charges are then globally transferred to storage devices associated with the pixels. A rolling double reset is used to reduce the deleterious effects on the accumulated charges stored in the storage devices. The accumulated charges stored in the storage devices are transferred to floating diffusion regions associated with the pixels and the charges residing in the floating diffusion region are read out. In a second embodiment the storage device is eliminated and the rolling double reset is used to reduce the deleterious effects on the accumulated charges stored in the floating diffusion region.

  • Patent number: 7696464
Abstract: An imager in which a column line bias current control signal is pulsed at some time during and/or after the pulsing of the reset control and the transfer control signals to increase a bias current in a pixel column line during reset and transfer operations. The bias current is then decreased by removing the pulse before the sampling and storing of reset and image signals. Pulsing the bias control voltage signal and thus, the bias current, decreases the settling time of the column line, while maintaining the required low current during sampling and storage of the reset and image signals.

  • Patent number: 7619671
Abstract: A method and apparatus are provided for operation of an image sensor during signal readout. During a reset operation the gate of a reset transistor coupled to the storage node receives a voltage greater than a threshold voltage to produce a reset of the storage node. During a period where photogenerated charges stored at the storage node are read out the gate of the reset transistor receives a voltage VRST—LOW greater than ground, but less than a maximum voltage which can be stored at the storage node.

  • Patent number: 7605440
Abstract: A pixel having a well-isolated charge storage region or floating diffusion region may be obtained by providing a separate P-well around the storage region or floating diffusion region. In one embodiment, a separate P-well entirely encases the storage region and is in contact with the storage region. This P-well provides an electrical barrier for preventing electrons that are generated elsewhere in the pixel from contaminating the storage region. In another embodiment, a first separate P-well encases and is in contact with the storage region and a second separate P-well encases and is in contact with the floating diffusion region.
