Patent number: 5540761Abstract: A clog-resistant filter for extracting fine particulate contaminants, such as smoke, from a gaseous fluid stream, such as air, uses interaction between Van der Waals forces and a non-ionizing electrostatic field to efficiently capture the contaminant particles in a filter material whose pores are many times larger than the diameter of the particles to be captured. The filter material is physically so configured to further enhance that interaction and is disposed between at least a pair of electrodes of opposite polarity. The material may be spaced apart from the electrodes, but preferably touches one of them. The particles are trapped generally throughout the thickness of the filter material but ample room is left for continued air flow. The electrostatic voltage is preferably between 3 and 9 kV and is largely independent of electrode spacing. The configuration of the filter material is such that the flow velocity through the material is less than 0.1 m/sec, preferably on the order of 0.03 m/sec.Type: GrantFiled: November 21, 1994Date of Patent: July 30, 1996Inventor: Yujiro Yamamoto

Patent number: 5368635Abstract: A non-ionizing, clog-resistant filter for extracting fine particulate contaminants such as smoke from a gaseous fluid stream such as air uses interaction between Van der Waals forces and a non-ionizing electrostatic field to efficiently capture the contaminant particles in a filter material whose pores are many times larger than the diameter of the particles to be captured. The filter material is physically so configured to further enhance that interaction, and is disposed between at least a pair of electrodes of opposite polarity. The material may be spaced from the electrodes, but preferably touches one of them. The particles are trapped deeply into the thickness of the filter material and leave ample room for continued air flow. The electrostatic voltage is preferably between 3 and 9 kV and is largely independent or electrode spacing. The configuration of the filter material is such that the flow velocity through the material is less than 0.1 m/sec, preferably on the order of 0.03 m/sec.Type: GrantFiled: April 20, 1994Date of Patent: November 29, 1994Inventor: Yujiro Yamamoto

Patent number: 4386341Abstract: A security device incorporates apparatus for producing a special alarm sound in response to a change in acceleration sensed with a special omnidirectional sensor and under the control of special SCR circuitry. The circuitry and sensor are especially adapted for the security application but have independent utility. The alarm generates two tones in the middle audio range, separated by 50 to 200 Hz. One of those tones is interrupted at a sub-audible rate of 3 to 8 Hz. The resulting alarm, at high volume levels, is of enhanced urgency, compelling a hearer to escape, the compulsion being of a degree not easily overcome by reason.Type: GrantFiled: June 4, 1981Date of Patent: May 31, 1983Inventor: Yujiro Yamamoto

Patent number: 4093883Abstract: A multimorph is a piezoelectric element which moves or bends as an incident to being charged or otherwise subjected to an electrostatic field so that a potential gradient appears across the element. The amount of movement or bending can be sufficient to actuate electrical contacts whereby the multimorph is useful in switches and relays. Improved multimorph construction and mounting, improved contact construction and mounting, and improved arrangements for subjecting multimorphs to electrostatic charges to provide improved switching and relay units are disclosed. Such units may be incorporated in time delay systems and the manner in which that can be done is disclosed along with other applications.Type: GrantFiled: April 20, 1977Date of Patent: June 6, 1978Inventor: Yujiro Yamamoto

Patent number: 4042967Abstract: An improved ground fault tester uses a magnetostrictive element or piezo-electric element, such as a multimorph, which changes dimensions upon being magnetized or electrically charged. The dimensional change is used to interrupt the power circuit in which the ground fault occurs. The existence of a ground fault is sensed by a sensor which supplies current to the magnetostrictive or piezo-electric element. In the case of the piezo-electric element, the charge is dissipated through a parallel discharge circuit whereby interruption of the power circuit is accomplished rapidly and is reclosed only after a time delay. Automatic time delay resetting may be easily accomplished by the addition of a single resistor and a rectifier.Type: GrantFiled: October 28, 1975Date of Patent: August 16, 1977Inventor: Yujiro Yamamoto
