Patent number: 8118143Abstract: An emergency braking assembly that stops the rotation of a shaft in the event that the speed of the shaft exceeds a predetermined speed. The braking assembly includes a flanged mounting ring that is mounted to a housing where the shaft extends through the ring, and a braking ring threadably mounted to the mounting ring. An insert is mounted to the shaft within the braking ring. The braking assembly insert includes a pair of symmetrical weights that tend to move outward upon rotation of the shaft. Patent number: 6923295Abstract: The present invention relates to a friction brake, in particular a disc brake, for a motor vehicle with a friction element, e.g. a brake disc, coupled to the rotation of a vehicle wheel, forming a friction pairing of the friction brake with at least one associated brake lining, and with at least one clamping device for pressing at least one brake lining to the friction element. At least one controllable friction clutch is provided for using the rotational energy of the friction element in order to obtain the clamping force of the friction brake, the friction clutch being coupled on its input end to the rotation of the friction element and on its output end to the clamping device. Functional advantages are achieved because a friction pairing of the friction clutch is provided independently of the friction pairing of the friction brake. This eliminates undesired mutual influences. Altogether, such a friction brake obviates the need for an additional energy source for generating a brake clamping force.Type: GrantFiled: May 23, 2003Date of Patent: August 2, 2005Assignee: Continental Teves AG & Co. oHGInventors: Georg Halasy-Wimmer, Stefan Johannes Schmitt, Andreas Pohlmann, Johannes Görlach

Patent number: 6508336Abstract: A disc brake assembly includes a stationary member, a rotating member defining an axis of rotation, a plurality of stationary discs spaced axially along the axis of rotation within the stationary member, and a plurality of movable discs interspaced with the stationary discs. A brake coupler supports the movable discs. During non-braking vehicle operation, the movable discs and the brake coupler remain stationary relative to the stationary discs. During a braking maneuver, the coupler couples the movable discs to the rotating member such that the movable discs are caused to rotate with respect to the stationary discs. Once the coupler and rotating member are interconnected a piston moves the stationary and movable discs together to reduce rotation of the rotating member and brake the vehicle.Type: GrantFiled: February 4, 2000Date of Patent: January 21, 2003Assignee: Meritor Heavy Vehicle Systems, LLCInventor: Raji El-Kassouf

Patent number: 6305505Abstract: An improve wet disc brake incorporates a two part rotating disc. One of the two parts is selectively rotatable, and the other part is constantly rotating with the rotor. The rotor carries an air supply which creates an air bearing between the constantly rotating disc portion and the selectively rotating disc portion. During non-braking operation the air bearing maintains the selectively rotating portion out of contact with the rotating portion. Fluids other than air may be used. The selectively rotating portion thus remains stationary within the wet disc brake chamber, reducing frictional losses. When braking is desired, the flow of air to the air bearing is stopped. A bias force forces the selectively rotating portion into contact with the constantly rotating portion. Then, braking does occur by operation of the stator discs to move towards contact with the rotor discs.Type: GrantFiled: January 27, 2000Date of Patent: October 23, 2001Assignee: Meritor Heavy Vehicle Systems, LLCInventors: Paul M.
